Munnar
Munnar, also known as the Kashmir of South India, is a peaceful hill station with its
impeccable beauty has become the most sought after destination for a holiday. Munnar was the
erstwhile 'Summer Capital' of the British Government in South India.
The word Munnar in Tamil means three rivers. Munnar is located where the rivers Mudrapuzha,
Nallathani and Kundala converge and so the name. Located at an altitude of 1,829 m, it is home to
South India's highest peak called Anamudi, standing 2,695 m tall. It is also an important
commercial centre in the Idukki district. The economy of Munnar thrives primarily from its vast
tea estates and coffee plantations. Tourism is also another contributor. Often referred to as the
Kashmir of South India, Munnar offers tourists a mix of relaxation and adventure amidst beautiful
landscapes.
The neelakurinji, a blue flower which blooms only every twelve years, is found in this region. It
bloomed last in December 2006. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, at
2695m.
The tea plantations and holiday facilities make this a popular hill station in Kerala.
Places to Visit
Atukkad Waterfalls (5 kms from Munnar)
A scenic waterfalls amidst hills and jungles. You can find a road leading to Atukkad Waterfalls
on Kochi road. This road is very narrow and needs a lot of experience to drive on.
Check out several natural waterfalls on the way to Munnar. These waterfall carry fresh rain
water. They provide an excellent place for all tourists to have photo shootout.
Potheamedu (6km from Munnar)
Pothamedu offers an excellent view of the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations in Munnar. The rolling hills, the cool mountain and the breathtaking scenery here is ideal for trekking and long mountain walks.
Devikulam (7km from Munnar)
This small hill station with its velvet lawns, exotic flora and fauna and the cool mountain air . It is a beautiful place with lot of tea plantations. The Sita Devi Lake with its mineral waters and picturesque surroundings is a good picnic spot. The lake is also ideal for trout fishing.
Pallivasal (8km from Munnar)
This is the venue of the first Hydro Electric project in Kerala. It is place of immense scenic beauty. On working days it is possible to visit Hydro Electric project. (Permission should be taken from the electricity department)
Mattupetti Dam (10km from Munnar)
This is a popular picnic spot with facility for activities like boating and horse riding and is a great place to spend the day especially if visiting with children.
Echo Point (15km from Munnar)
on the way to top station from Munnar is a small lake set amidst rolling hills. Every loud call made from a spot on the lake embankment is returned manifold by the echo from the surrounding hills. Young tourists throng to this place to listen to the echoes of their friendship calls.
Top Station (37km from Munnar)
Top station is the "top"-tourist attraction on the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border. This place gives a real 'above the clouds' experience. Regular buses go to Top Station (1 hr) from Munnar. A jeep costs Rs 400. The area is known for the Neelakurunji plant, which flowers only once every twelve years. The flower is violet. It bloomed last in December 2006.
